Elton John 原名 Reginald Kenneth Dwight ,1947年出生于英國倫敦的近郊。幼年時就讀于英國皇家音樂學(xué)院，1964年畢業(yè)后就白天做音樂出版商，晚上到酒吧里彈鋼琴。幾年后加入一支名為 Bluesolgy 的樂隊，該樂隊因為許多著名的美國靈歌樂手伴奏而出名。1967年，經(jīng) Liberty唱片公司介紹，Elton John結(jié)識了詞作家 Bernie Taupin ，兩人隨即成為黃金拍檔一直合作至今。1969年，Phillips 公司發(fā)行了兩人合作的第一首單曲“Lady Samantha”（薩曼莎女士），從而引起DIM公司的興趣，不久就為 Elton John出版了第一張專輯《Empty Sky》（空空的天）。幾個月后，Elton John的同名專輯推出，其中的一首“Your Song”（你的歌）同時打進英美排行榜前10名。在為電影《Friends》（朋友）創(chuàng)作并出版原聲專輯后，Elton John又推出了帶鄉(xiāng)村樂風格的專輯《Tumbleweed Connection》（風滾草的聯(lián)系）和現(xiàn)場版專輯《17－10－70》，這3 張專輯加上《Elton John》全部打入排行榜前30佳的行列，這一成就以前只有 The Beatles樂隊才有過。從此，Elton John成為全球最出名的流行搖滾樂手之一，他迎合時代的需要，填補了 The Beatles之后留下的空白。
